This week, we interrupt our global fandom safari for a matter of dire urgency! ~~People are wrong on the internet!~~ There is a crisis that only the Doctor, the Winchester brothers, Holmes and Watson can solve (and possibly the Avengers if they aren't busy?)! That's right, this week, we're getting meta and bending the laws of time and space to talk about fans of SuperWhoLock! Next week, we bend the laws of space and time back into place as we travel to Russia to talk about fans of that magical sport (and its fans): Figure skating! ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **Fandom Origins:** SuperWhoLock is, unsurprisingly, the crossover between the fandoms of Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock (with the Avengers sometimes making an appearance). The first tagged SuperWhoLock post (on Tumblr) appeared in August 2011, and the first SuperWhoLock fanfic was tagged on Archive of our own in August 2012 (though it is possible that stories first appeared as early as January 2012 elsewhere). > In SuperWhoLock’s case, this usually involves saving the world from impending apocalypse, something so serious that it only makes sense to enlist as many superheroes as possible to stop it—in this case, the Doctor and his assistants, Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Sam and Dean Winchester, and the angel Castiel. > > — [The Daily Dot - WTF is SuperWhoLock?](https://www.dailydot.com/upstream/superwholock-fandom-supernatural-sherlock/) **Names:** SuperWhoLockian??? **Most Active:** Based on [Google Trends data](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=superwholock) and [Fanlore](https://fanlore.org/wiki/SuperWhoLock), it appears that the fandom was most popular in the summer of 2014 (in particular, mid July 2014 - The month of [DashCon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DashCon)). Interest was maintained from June 2013 to about January 2015 before starting its downward decline again. **Where does fandom live:** Almost entirely on Tumblr **Related fandoms:** Obviously, Sherlock, Doctor Who, and Supernatural are most related to SuperWhoLock fandom. There are some parodies fandoms that exist as well: - Bee Shrek Test in the House - Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons ### This week's spotlight **[Organization for Transformative Works](http://www.transformativeworks.org/how-you-can-help/)** The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) is a nonprofit organization run by and for fans to provide access to and preserve the history of fanworks and fan cultures. ## Where can you find us online? Fanthropological is an anthropological (ish) podcast where we bring the fan's-eye view to you! Each week, we take a look at a different fandom, dig up interesting background, trivia, and history, and try to get to why it is that people are a fan. We also try to highlight good causes related to that fandom, and find interesting things that fans have created to share those to the world. Each episode is about an hour. Ish. ## Who is "The Nickscast"? *We* are the Nickscast! Three products of late-80s / early-90s pop culture who love exploring fandom and everything geek ... who also happen to have been best buddies since high school, and all happen to be named Nick. Yes, we are super creative. Dare we say, the most creative. *Ahem* We are Nick Green, Nick Terwoord, and Nick Zacharewicz: We started the Nickscast as a labour of love, and as a place to entertain and to discuss our love of fans and fandom, and all that is shiny and interesting in that realm. It's what lead us to start our first podcast, our satellite podcasts, Fanthropological, and so much more. We want to help others learn more about different fandoms, and to create empathy with other fans: We dream of a world where other fans aren't "those Weird-o's", but just folks with different tastes. A world where fandom is full of discourse and analysis, and there are plenty of tools and resources to help. Fans building communities to do good in the world. *Because everyone's a fan.* ## Credits ### Sources - [Fanlore - I would pay top dollar for a comprehensive, source-supported explanation of how SuperWhoLock vanished.](https://fanlore.org/wiki/I_would_pay_top_dollar_for_a_comprehensive,_source-supported_explanation_of_how_SuperWhoLock_vanished.) - [Fanlore - SuperWhoLock](https://fanlore.org/wiki/SuperWhoLock) - [Know Your Meme - SuperWhoLock](http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/superwholock) - [Know Your Meme - Mishapocalypse](http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/mishapocalypse) - [GeneratorLand.com - SuperWhoLock Url Generator](http://www.generatorland.com/usergenerator.aspx?id=7917) - [The Artifice - The Keys to SuperWhoLock](https://the-artifice.com/the-keys-to-superwholock/) - [The Daily Dot - WTF is SuperWhoLock?](https://www.dailydot.com/upstream/superwholock-fandom-supernatural-sherlock/) - [Wikipedia - DashCon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DashCon) - [The Daily Fandom - What Are the Odds of SuperWhoLock Actually Happening?](https://thedailyfandom.com/odds-superwholock-actually-happening/) - [Random Things That Amuse Me - What am I supposed to do with a ringing phone?](http://debyarr1.tumblr.com/post/52513065609) - [Classic tumblr memes - the internet must hate us](http://memearchives.tumblr.com/post/124175229795/geekerypokery-potterheads-grab-your-wands) ### Music / Sound - All music and sound for this week's episode were provided by Nick Green! ### Artwork - ["Glasses"](https://thenounproject.com/term/glasses/132894) by [Anton Anuchin](https://thenounproject.com/antonwebium) used under [CC BY 3.0](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/us/) - ["Tardis"](https://thenounproject.com/term/tardis/55171) by [Arancha R](https://thenounproject.com/aranchaerre) used under [CC BY 3.0](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/us/) - ["Sun"](https://thenounproject.com/term/sun/919928) by [beguima](https://thenounproject.com/beguimastudio) used under [CC BY 3.0](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/us/) - ["Sherlock Holmes"](https://thenounproject.com/term/sherlock-holmes/221829) by [Matthew Davis](https://thenounproject.com/matthewwadedavis) used under [CC BY 3.0](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/us/)

This week, we're continuing our journey around the world, venturing to South Korea to up our actions per minute (APM) as we learn more about fans of Starcraft! Steven Universe - They’re … Space Rocks!

Here we are in the future... and talking about the lessons, culture, and fandom of Steven and the Crystal Gems! Why is it so popular, especially among other contemporary animations? _“Steven Universe is an American animated television series created by Rebecca Sugar for Cartoon Network. It is Cartoon Network's first animated series to be created solely by a woman. It is the coming-of-age story of a young boy, Steven Universe (voiced by Zach Callison), who lives with the Crystal Gems—magical, humanoid aliens named Garnet (Estelle), Amethyst (Michaela Dietz), and Pearl (Deedee Magno Hall)—in the fictional town of Beach City. Steven, who is half-Gem, has adventures with his friends and helps the Gems protect the world from their own kind. The themes of the series include love, family, and the importance of healthy interpersonal relationships.”_ [—Steven Universe - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Universe) ## Episode Outline **Topics:** _Animation in the 90s, Animation in the 00s, Representation in Media, LGBTQ+, Toxic Masculinity, Secondary Audiences, Media Criticism_ ### Fandom Facts * From the [2017 r/stevenuniverse survey](https://www.reddit.com/r/stevenuniverse/comments/78fe1f/the_2017_rstevenuniverse_survey_final_results/) (again, skewed by reddit’s demographics): * 60.7% identify as male, 33.8% as female, 3.4% as non-binary * Only 50.9% identify as heterosexual; 23.7% identify as bi/pansexual, 13.7% as homosexual, and 6.1% asexual * 54.9% are 20 or younger, 15.6% are older than 25 (or just 5% over 30) * Top 3 Songs: It’s Over Isn’t It (19.7%), Here Comes a Thought (16.8%), and Love Like You (12.3%) * Interest in Steven Universe is pretty spikey; plotting it against Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, and Regular show in [Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%205-y&q=%2Fm%2F0r3t_0y,%2Fm%2F0807c5r,Adventure%20Time,Gravity%20Falls) over the past 5 ...
